What is The Straw Hat Cholo?

It’s a newsletter about anime. My confidence finally let me put myself out there so here I am. I’m very green at this writing thing so bear with me if you want to read my thoughts on whatever facet of the anime world I find interesting.

Who am I?

I’m a 26 year old weeb from North Carolina who works a boring administrative assistant job at a law firm. I have been watching anime consistently for about 5 years now. Life hasn’t been all that it’s cracked up to be post-college, but luckily anime has always been there. This newsletter is just a personal project that’ll let me show my appreciation for this amazing, diverse medium that I enjoy.

Where does The Straw Hat Cholo name come from?

The Straw Hat part comes from my favorite anime/manga of all time, One Piece. The protagonist’s name is Monkey D. Luffy, and his nickname is Straw Hat Luffy because he wears a straw hat. His pirate crew are the Straw Hat Pirates, and I like to think of myself as an honorary member of the Straw Hats.

Cholo is a nickname that one of my close friends from college gave me. We had barely met, and he asked if he could call me Cholo. I was okay with it thinking it wasn’t going to last, but sure enough it stuck as my close friend group called me Cholo more than my actual name while we were in college.

Anything you want to plug?

First and foremost I encourage people to watch anime. It’s a beautiful form of media, and there’s something for everyone. It’s becoming more accessible as its popularity in the US continues to rise so all you have to do is give it a shot.

Second, I want to plug these 2 newsletters: Dime Store and The Irish Wristwatch. These newsletters belong to my talented friends. Subscribe to them if you want the latest takes on the NBA and music.

Lastly, subscribe to this newsletter if you’re down to go along this journey with me. I hope to keep improving and learning as I continue to write. I definitely will appreciate it if you do tag along.
